A team of researchers from the Prague University of Economics and Business, led by Milena Chadimová and her colleagues, has found that making words “meaningless” can significantly improve the reasoning skills of large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and others. The Power of ‘Hashing’ – What’s That?

Picture your brain dealing with a complex problem. Now, imagine if certain distracting words could be temporarily turned into gibberish, allowing you to think more clearly. This is somewhat akin to what the researchers did with LLMs! They used a method called “hashing,” where they replaced bias-inducing words with random strings (like turning “artist” to “B2H90”) to see if it would help these models think more logically and accurately. Turns out, it worked wonders!

Background: Why Do LLMs Need a Helping Hand?

Even though LLMs like those developed by OpenAI and others are super smart, they occasionally stumble due to cognitive biases, which are misleading tendencies influenced by the specific words they’re trained on, similar to our human biases. These models can end up like those know-it-all friends who, despite knowing a lot, can’t get past their preconceived notions.

For instance, in tests mimicking the well-known “Linda problem”—a classic psychology exercise exploring how people tend to ignore logic in favor of narratives—LLMs often fell for traps identical to those humans do. The bias didn’t just stop there; it revealed itself during tasks involving frequent itemset extraction and handling structured data too.

The Experiments: Putting Hashing to the Test

Experiment 1: Tackling the Linda Problem

Chadimová’s team tweaked the Linda problem so that typical identifiers (like “philosopher” or “activist”) were replaced by meaningless hash-like terms. Through various rounds of tests with different AI models (including GPT-3.5, GPT-4, Llama 2, and Gemini), the hash strategy notably reduced their bias-driven mistakes.

Experiment 2: Handling Data Without Headaches

The second test involved getting LLMs to correctly identify frequent itemsets within data, like picking out commonly paired items from a grocery list. When normal and “not-true” (implementation of wrong logical pairs) datasets were given to LLMs, hashing turned those datasets into more deductive-friendly puzzle pieces. Once again, the models improved their performance in recognizing accurate patterns despite hurdles.

Experiment 3: Letting Tables Do the Talking

Lastly, the researchers explored how changing the problem’s representation—turning free text problems into CSV tables and hashing the entries—might influence the outcomes. Interestingly, formatted as tables, and hashed with identifiers, the AI models made more sound judgments, staying clear of the usual pitfalls of conjunction fallacy (a tendency to perceive specific and detailed scenarios as more probable).

What Does This Mean for Us and AI?

This study opens an array of possibilities for deploying sharper AI in fields where logic and accuracy are pivotal, such as data analysis, automated decision-making, or even in crafting more interactive AI assistants. It implies that by cleverly adjusting input prompts, anyone can potentially benefit from AI that’s less likely to be tripped by contextual biases.

Yet, it’s important to balance judgment— sometimes hashing can cause LLM hallucinations, where models make confident assertions about unknown facts. While AI models still need broader training to grasp logical fallacies inherently, this research exposes a practical, intermediary solution for improving AI reasoning.
