Despite these essential skills, students in the study also reported gaps in areas like prompt engineering (crafting effective prompts to get the best out of AI), bias awareness, and managing AI outputs.

How Educators Can Step Up

Educators play a pivotal role in guiding students as they navigate the world of AI. The research outlines six key strategies for lecturers to incorporate GenAI into their teaching practices effectively:

  1. Integration into Curriculum: Ensuring that AI tools are embedded within existing courses will help students engage meaningfully with these technologies.

  2. Design Project-Oriented Tasks: Students prefer hands-on, real-world applications of AI tools rather than traditional assessments focused solely on exams.

  3. Policy Development: Educators should work on creating clear guidelines on using AI responsibly, touching on ethical practices and academic integrity.

  4. Upskilling Teaching Staff: It’s vital for educators to familiarize themselves with AI technologies so they can guide students effectively.
